Elks Care Elks Share
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O. Elks) is dedicated to the principles of charity and patriotism. Over the past 157 years, the Elks have contributed more than $2.69 billion in cash, goods, and services to support the nation’s youth, veterans, individuals facing hardships, and various patriotic and civic programs. In the 1998-99 fiscal year alone, the organization provided over $160 million in charitable contributions, solidifying its place as one of the largest private providers of college scholarships in the United States.
Despite its profound impact, the Elks' contributions remain relatively unknown to the general public. This is largely because the organization has historically refrained from seeking recognition, fundraising publicly, or accepting government funding. In fact, the Elks operate in reverse—providing donations rather than receiving them. Notably, the Elks gifted the government its first veterans hospital, regularly support schools and emergency services, and extend assistance to young individuals and those in need across the nation.
What drives this extraordinary force of generosity? It stems from the unwavering commitment of Elks members, whose deep sense of community, strategic long-term planning, and dedication to volunteer service fuel the Order’s enduring legacy. Every act of kindness is carried out with enthusiasm, entirely free of charge, reflecting the true essence of volunteerism.
Additionally, the B.P.O. Elks operates under a democratic structure, with leadership—including Exalted Rulers of local Lodges, the Grand Exalted Ruler (national president), and other key decision-makers—serving without salaries. Governance is shaped through voting at national conventions, ensuring representation and transparency in decision-making.
The national headquarters of the Elks is based in Chicago, home to the Elks Veterans Memorial Building, the Elks National Foundation (the Order’s charitable trust), the Elks National Veterans Service Commission, and The Elks Magazine, the official publication distributed to every member. This central hub serves as a testament to the organization’s longstanding commitment to philanthropy and civic engagement.
The Groton Elks #2163 truly makes a difference in our community. Their charitable efforts have positively impacted many lives in Groton and surrounding areas.
